Erythema Annulare Centrifugum in Basal Cell Carcinoma

Erythema annulare centrifugum is characterized by slowly enlarging scaly erythemas on the trunk and extremities. Histopathologically, a dense perivascular infiltrate and epidermal changes like acanthosis, parakeratosis and focal spongiosis are present. Although its origin remains unknown in most patients associations have been reported with infections, autoimmune diseases, medications, food or neoplasms. It has been discussed that allergic reactions to still unknown antigens may be relevant in pathogenesis. We report about a 78-year-old woman with erythema annulare centrifugum thatwas refractory to therapy but disappeared after the complete excision of a basal cell carcinoma. We would like to discuss a potential relationship between manifestation of the erythema annulare centrifugum and the basal cell carcinoma.
