Its theoretical fundaments are framed in the field of written language didactics and were addressed from historical socio-cultural approach. The data collection technique was discussion group because it is considered the most appropriate procedure for the study of social representations. The selection of members of discussion group is made through of surveys to heads and student of diverse academic programs, in order to identify teachers who often request their students writing essays. The information emerged from group discussion was described, analyzed and discussed in the light of the theory of social representations (by Serge Moscovici); that is, it focused on its dimensions (information and field representation) and the dynamics of configuration (objectification and anchoring). The analysis was done by two-way: deductive and inductive. Discussion of the results leads to the conclusions and recommendations of the study. It seems that the teaching essay writing is an important topic only in high education, at universities
