IN SEARCH OF A NEW CLASS - EVIDENCE FROM AUSTRALIA

Using International Social Survey Program data, attitudes of Australian and American professionals, managers, and blue-collar workers toward egalitarianism, business, and labor were compared. In the United States, the attitudes of professionals and managers were conservative in contrast to those of blue-collar workers, and the attitudes of social/cultural professionals and technical professionals were not significantly different. In Australia, the attitudes of professionals and blue-collar workers were liberal in contrast to those of managers. Social/cultural professionals were significantly more egalitarian than technical professionals but did not differ from them on issues related to business and labor. The bearing of these results on new-class theories is discussed.
