Acute suppurative parotitis is an inflammatory process of the parotid gland most often caused by stasis within or obstruction of the Stensen duct leading to polymicrobial bacterial infection. Hospitalists are most likely to encounter this condition as a postoperative complication caused by dehydration, poor oral hygiene, medications that reduce salivary production, and the formation of sialoliths. This article discusses the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, routine management, and hospitalists role in prevention of this condition. It also discusses the broader differential and the role of diagnostic imaging and consultation in management of complicated cases. © 2015 Elsevier Inc.
