This article proposes a way of developing a reflection over the polissemic, instable and volatile concept of memory, in its relation with state of remembering and oblivion, starting with the analysis on the romance Mendel the Bookman, written by Stefan Zweig, in the context of the european societies modernization at the beginning of the 20th century, wich represented a moment of destructuring, transformation and rupture, specially in the conflictuous relation between memory and oblivion.
