Iron microelectrodes have been used to study the dissolution kinetics in acidic perchlorate solutions, in the absence and in the presence of acetonitrile. The results compare well with previous measurements on a conventional sized rotating disc electrode. The advantages of using microelectrodes are apparent at high current densities, where more detailed information is obtained. The negligible ohmic drop at microelectrodes facilitate the study of the pre-passive region. Acetonitrile was found to inhibit the active dissolution of iron, but does not participate in the passivation reaction. © 1990.
