The National Congress Party (NIF) of Sudan is controlled by the National Islamic Front (NIF), which is a competent cadre of men who have an agenda, the purpose of which has killed millions of Sudanese and uprooted and destroyed the lives of millions more. On the other hand, the Sudanese Peoples Liberation Movement and Army (SPLM/A) is an international coalition led by the US. The international community has established the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), a detailed document that ended a twenty-two-year war between the NIF government and the people of southern Sudan, the Nuba Mountains, Southern Blue Nile and Abyei. Today, the CPA is in a very serious risk of survival. Abyei is an oil field, an is important in the political equation of Sudan. Its products are fueling the NIF's war in Darfur. With the death of the SPLM leader, Garang, the SPLM is trying to position from the loss and has since been experiencing destabilization by NIF. The destruction of SPLM will mean the end of the CPA. There are however options for the international community. One is to redeploy the now-stymied UN protection force, provide substantial assistance to the SPLM to empower its participation in governance, focus urgently on the upcoming interim elections and referendum, seriously consider Abyei and assist the SPLA in its conversion from a rebel force to a modern military force and run after the crimes the NIF has committed through the decades.
