Pope Leo XIII and release of the slaves in Brazil

The aim of this study is presenting the debate by Leo XIII on the liberation of slaves in Brazil. It is said that the freeing of slaves in Brazil and other countries of the Americas did not mean the end of social problems and conflicts that blacks and their descendants faced historically, but the beginning of a new cycle of struggles and social and political achievements. However, one cannot deny that the struggle to end slavery system and therefore the release of captives was paramount. In this struggle the Church and other social organizations played a decisive role.
