摘要
The breakage of gas bubbles in a turbulent flow field is explored. Break-up was found to occur by a dumbbell elongation of the bubble. The elongational viscosity was found to correlate the observed dependence of maximum bubble size with the nature of the continuous phase. The effect of surfactants on the break-up mechanism was examined and the rate of replenishment of surfactants at the interface and their subsequent orientation were found to determine the surface elasticity and thus the rate of break-up. Small inorganic ions were found not to influence the maximum bubble size.
