Nanotechnology is the key technology of the next decades. Because of miniaturization nanoobjects show partially altered physical and chemical properties than the bulk material. The smaller a particle the greater its toxicity. Nanoparticles are capable of causing a bronchial and pulmonary inflammatory reaction. In addition, occasional cases of pulmonary fibrosis are documented. Preconsisting conditions like bronchial asthma, could be worsened. Moreover, a promoting effect in regard to type 1 allergies have been described. The main issue is whether or not nanoparticles posses a general carcinogenic potential, regardless of the chemical configuration. In regard to the obvious geometrical similarities of nanotubes and asbestos fibres the carcinogenic potential must be examined. Moreover, adverse effects in regard to the cardiovascular system and other organ systems have been observed. The present article summarizes the actual understanding of nanotoxicology.
