Viral infections cause 75% of all acute respiratory illnesses. Common viral respiratory infections include influenza, parainfluenza, and respiratory syncytial virus. In this article, the second in a four-part series on virology, we review the prevalence and symptoms of viral respiratory diseases, and discuss effective techniques for organism detection, including isolation and collection.
