Magnetic resonance imaging diagnostics of meniscus lesions

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the knee joint is now a routine tool in the diagnostic assessment of patients with suspected meniscus pathology. MRI confirms the diagnosis and provides additional information on internal joint structures. Position, shape, and size of the meniscal tear are visualized. Furthermore, bone marrow edema as a sign of mechanical stress or perfusion defects is detectable, which can influence the arthroscopic procedure and post-operative treatment. Patient and surgeon are supported in decision-making and performance of the surgical procedure as well as in the etiologic assignment of symptoms.
