This paper aims to present a brief history of phonology, branch of linguistics that studies the sound system of a language. The Phonology organizes a systematization of the data provided by Phonetics - phones - as well as selects the mechanisms for establishing the phonemes of a language. It is based on universal principles and applies to a particular language and the theoretical models that describe it. This historical will present the point of view of its role in the system of linguistic communication in two moments: Structuralism and Generative.
