THE STRENGTHS OF BLACK-FAMILIES REVISITED

The ''Strengths of Black Families'' introduced by Robert B. Hill in 1972 are presented as a useful paradigm for understanding family behavior. The research literature and Census data am drawn upon to demonstrate that there continue to be enormous strengths in African American families. The ''practice'' approach to Hill's ''Strengths'' in the work of Ethel Hall and Gloria King is introduced as an effective means for developing family intervention strategies as social, economic and political changes affect family functioning and outcomes in America. To this end, continuing research and application of this paradigm is encouraged.
