Quantification and relation between the classification of brazilian championship of football and attack and defense The period 2003 to 2008

Introduction: The Brazilian soccer Championship is one of the most famous and disputed championships in the world nowadays. The games are extremely dificult and are performed in round trip games, in the south or in the north of the country. The scores are cumulative, three points for the winner and one point to the tie. Objective/Proposal: Thus, there was the interest in researching what is determinant to become a Champion, a strong and solid defense or a more efficient attack. Materials and Methods: It were performed a total of 2.706 games and all of them with cumulative scores. The championship tables were researched in the Brazilian Confederation of Football website. Results: In six disputed championships, four were won by the team with best attacks and two were won by the team with best defense. Discussion: We have verified that the best attacks were champions in four last editions between 2003 and 2006. Conclusion: we analyzed the data and conclude that teams more efficient in attack, in other words, they had more goals scored along of the championship, obtained the best classification at the end of the season.
