IMMIGRATION POLICY AND THE ISSUE OF NATIONALITY

The article documents the evolution of the debate in French politics during the 1980s about the issue of immigration. It identifies a of distinct periods, and describes for each of them the influential events, the parameters of the political debate and the content of the main legislation enacted. Additionally, it demonstrates how the debate over immigration has evolved into a debate about the nature and obligations of vFrench citizenship in a context where young Franco-Maghrebis have become autonomous and influential political actors. © 1991, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
