On October 23 1956 Gianfranco Contini wrote to Lanfranco Caretti, then professor of Italian literature at the University of Pavia, a letter which presented a reasoned argument to support Cesare Segre's candidacy for the Pavia professorship in Romance Philology. By publishing and commenting on this letter, this article sheds light on the beginning of Segre's university career as well as on Segre's relationship with Gianfranco Contini's teaching.
