Older people, population ageing and social policy in Taiwan

This article focuses in depth on Taiwan, as a case study, to discuss and review recent development in ageing policies and their impact on older people. The development of ageing policies in Taiwan presents a good example in understanding how a country, under the challenge of rapid population ageing, has developed its social policies. It also demonstrates how policy reforms are shaped by social and political levers and drivers. This article discusses Taiwan's policy development paying special attention to income maintenance and long-term care system for older people. The success and unresolved challenges arising from recent policy reforms in Taiwan are also addressed.
