SEXUAL PERCEPTIONS OF AN OLDER WOMAN

Sexist and ageist inequities and myths can adversely affect self-image, sexual expression and interpersonal relationships, especially for the older woman. Modern Western culture imposes a double-bind on older women. They are taught that youth is beautiful and that one must be sexually active to stay young, while at the same time that sexual expression in an older woman is less appropriate. A woman's feelings and thoughts about her body and self-image as a sexual being is often influenced by the way she sees herself reflected in the eyes of others. The purpose of this case study is two fold. First, to discuss sexual health issues pertinent to a case relating to the possible adverse effects of stereotyping and ageing on sexuality. Second, to describe the sexual counselling which took place when an older female client affected by sexual stereotyping consulted a Women's Health Nurse (WHN).
