Relationship between organizational performance and tenure of the CEO: a study in Brazilian open capital companies between 1999 and 2008

摘要：
This paper examines the relation between CEO tenure and the organization's performance. We tested two of hypotheses using an empirical sample of 34 large organizations publicly traded in BOVESPA between 1999 and 2008. To understand firms' performance, we analyzed firms that had only one CEO during the period examined. This analysis permitted us to conclude that (1) the CEOs' tenure was not linearly related to improved or declining firm's performance, (2) the performance of Brazilian firms has an inverted U relation to CEO tenure, (3) family business firms also reveal an inverted U performance behavior. This finding may be an indication that it might be prudent to proceed with CEO succession as soon as performance starts to decline.
