摘要
For sale in Portugal in February 1878, the novel, O Primo Basilio by Eca de Queiros did not take long to adorn the shelves of Rio de Janeiro's bookstores. The almost instant success of this literary work caused a marked reaction within Brazilian intellectual circles, especially among the literary critics, who, when it came to the morality of the book, were split between the prosecutors and the defenders. O Primo Basilio's reception, also had repercussions within the Brazilian caricature press of the time. However, as will be explored in this study, in the place of cartoons, verbal satire prevailed. This took the form of jokes, poems and spicy short stories, all under the influence of literary criticism.
