Sleep problems in midlife women should not necessarily be attributed to menopausal changes. The extent to which menopausal symptoms change over time and influence sleep during the perimenopausal and postmenopausal phases of midlife women's lives remains to be determined in larger longitudinal types of studies. Further research is needed to ascertain the extent to which obesity, depressive symptoms, sedentary lifestyle, or poor sleep behaviors may precede or overlap with the menopausal transition. © 2006 Elsevier Inc.
