Prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis infection in infertile men

Infertility is a major problem, man may be responsible for up to 50% of cases. The aim of this research was to determine the prevalence of infection in men with reproductive problems in Carabobo state, Venezuela. The study was descriptive and the sample was collected for two years from 2011. Through an indirect immunoenzimatic assay (ELISA), IgM and IgG anti Chlamydia trachomatis were determined. In total there was 8.3% (4 out of 48 men) infected, all young adults. The four men were positive detected as single anti-Chlamydia, 2 for IgG and 2 for IgM, that is 2 had active infection and 2 had chronic infection. We conclude in this first report of men that the infection with C. trachomatis appears to have a predominant role in the genesis of infertility, in similar proportions of those with active or chronic infection, therefore the natural history of the disease does not appear to strongly influence the occurrence of infertility, and that this information will enable health official organizations promote or improve existing health programs.
