摘要：

The A-B-C system of horizon nomenclature is shown to be unsatisfactory. A set of six principles for establishing horizons is given. A new nomenclature and symbols are proposed for soil horizons. The symbols can be used as map symbols and for producing formulae which form the basis of multiple hierarchies to satisfy different user requirements.
