COMPUTER-ASSISTANCE TO MANAGEMENT-INFORMATION-SYSTEMS IN THE LONDON UNDERGROUND

This report identifies the classes of information technology (IT) systems in transport with reference to London Underground and considers, in particular, management information systems. Areas for computer assistance to management systems are reviewed. Past, current and (predicted) future types of systems are analysed and the impact of developing technology considered. This leads to the definition of a current strategy for computer assistance and the identification of areas of potential major impact. The impact that fourth generation computer languages should have on systems development is described from both a user's and an IT specialist's viewpoint. In conclusion the report addresses the preparation of a system strategy for management information systems—the procedure for development of a strategy, its contents and, for London Underground Ltd, some of the standards and policies within the strategy. © 1990 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
