Human bite wounds to the hand are frequently underreported by patients and can be misdiagnosed if a physician does not keep a high level of suspicion for these potentially debilitating injuries. The most common presentation of these injuries is the so-called "fight bite'' injury. Given the polymicrobial nature of these wounds, broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy should be started as soon as possible. A low threshold for surgical irrigation and debridement should be maintained to protect against spreading infection and possible functional loss. At the time of operation, the wound should be explored in a systematic fashion and packed open. Close follow-up is warranted to ensure appropriate recovery.
