IN THE LAST 30 YEARS a large number of new beta-lactam antibiotics have been synthesized. Molecular modifications of the beta-acyl side chain have provided agents that meet the needs of changing microbial pathogens, which have successively become more resistant to older agents. Other changes in the molecules have yielded agents with markedly improved oral pharmacokinetics. This article surveys the various oral beta-lactam agents, with particular stress on the oral cephems.
