A new algorithm for reducing the index of a differential algebraic equation system is presented. The algebraic equations that are hidden in the high index formulation are constructed and suitable differential equations are deleted. In each step of the algorithm the index is reduced by 1. Therefore, the final index 1 formulation shows the correct number of degrees of freedom. Two examples (distillation columns, pendulum equation) show the quality of this approach.
