Recent literature pertaining to Australia's venture capital market suggests that the size of the market is growing at a rate which will soon justify the cessation of government intervention in the sector. Closer analysis of the characteristics of venture capital suggests that the size of this market has been exaggerated and policy adjustments may be required to prevent the contraction of the supply of capital to new, innovative, technology-based firms. These contradictions in interpreting market trends have implications for future evaluations of Australian science and technology policy. © 1990.
