PERFORMANCE, THERMOREGULATION AND ENERGY-METABOLISM OF HOLSTEIN-FRIESIAN COWS UNDER HEAT-STRESS .6. CONCLUSIONS FOR SELECTION ON HEAT TOLERANCE

In this last article of a series concerned with heat tolerance of lactation cows, the results of a long-term study are summarized on terms of their practical implications. Lastly, selection criteria for utilizing European high-performance cattle breeds in the tropica are discussed. It is indicated that selection, based on exclusively performance oriented parameters, is not suitable for improving heat tolerance in a population. For breeding pruposes in the tropics those animals demonstration highest production level in reference to their genetic potential should be selected.
