Philanthropy's role: working alongside communities to support social change

The field of philanthropy and funders at large can serve an important role in working alongside community to support social change. However, in doing so, the funder must answer challenging questions along the way: What is the role of a funder in supporting social and community change? How does a funder walk alongside community and support community leaders in realizing their vision? How can funders share what we learn in community with others? What can a funder do to encourage the sustainability and viability of the community programs it has helped set into motion? In this commentary, Linda Jo Doctor, a program officer at the W. K.
