摘要
The thermodynamic behaviour of compounds encountered during aluminum refining and fluxing has been analyzed. Sodium and magnesium can be removed from aluminum by Cl-2 gas combined with the use of molten NaCl-KCl. The addition of metal fluorides to the salt flux will increase the interactions between the metal and the flux, leading to increased contents of sodium in the refined metal, Cyclic voltammetry was carried out at 953 K to study the electrochemical behaviour of NaCl-KCl melts with additions of MgCl2, NaF and Na3AlF6. It was found that magnesium in the chloride flux can be made electrochemically inactive by the addition of metal fluorides. The activity coefficient of MgCl2 was found to decrease with the addition of NaF or Na3AlF6 due to the high thermodynamic stability of MgF2.
