THE LANDAU-POMERANCHUK-MIGDAL(LPM) EFFECT AND ITS INFLUENCE ON ELECTROMAGNETIC CASCADE SHOWERS AT EXTREMELY HIGH-ENERGIES

Based on recent results obtained by the author's group, the characteristics of LPM showers are discussed with regard to both, the average behavior of the shower and their fluctuations. Compared with conventional showers (BH showers), the validity of which has been already established at lower energies, the shower maximum of LPM showers is remarkably shifted to greater depth and the particle number at shower maximum increases remarkably slower with increasing incident energy than in BH showers. Also, fluctuations in an LPM shower are so large that we cannot distinguish individual LPM showers from the average LPM shower.
