Globally, the common channel Signaling System No. 7 (SS7) has grown and matured over the past five years in two directions. Outside of the U.S., the development of CCITT Signaling System No. 7 (C7) has grown largely due to the need for modern (digital/faster/more reliable) call completion capabilities in the national telephone networks. Within the U.S., SS7 has evolved from the need to provide fast and reliable data base services, and more recently to support of the custom calling (CLASS(SM)) features to the Local Exchange Carrier (LEC) networks. The 1990's will further accelerate the requirements for network solutions to customer needs, especially in the rapidly growing cellular telephony industry. These network solutions are forcing the merger of call delivery and data base services in both the SS7 and C7 worlds. The issues, concerns and difficulties with the merger of these functions will be discussed herein. Motorola, as a global cellular equipment provider, is continually evaluating the SS7 and C7 network service and feature opportunities to better serve our customers.
