Optical spectra of the Call transition 4s(2)S(1/2)-->4p(2)P(1/2) recorded for 9 isotopes (40 less than or equal to A less than or equal to 50) using collinear fast-beam spectroscopy with a very sensitive non-optical detection scheme. From the measured isotope shifts, values for mean square nuclear charge radii were deduced. The extension of the delta<r(2)> data to Ca-50 shows a distinct shell effect at N=28 with the same magnitude as for the isotonic stable chromium and iron nuclei, indicating a strong coupling between the p(3/2) neutrons and the core protons. From the obtained information on the hyperfine structure of the above-mentioned transition in Ca-49, a preliminary value for the nuclear magnetic moment of this nucleus was extracted (mu=-1.38(6)mu(n)), in perfect agreement with extended shell model calculations.
