Activities of the European Bank for reconstruction and development

Following an initiative by the G-7 states, a special assistance fund for nuclear safety (Nuclear Safety Account) has been set up to finance projects in the first two areas of the Action Program. Complementing other bilateral and multilateral programs, it supports the funding of urgent measures necessary to improve the safety of plant operation and for technical upgrading of plants, which cannot be backed by the operator countries. The fund finances purchases of equipment and related engineering services for nuclear power plants equipped with WER-440/V-230 and RBMK reactors. It thus contributes to the continued operation of these reactors nt a higher safety level until the energy situation in the countries concerned makes it possible to shut these nuclear power plants down at the earliest possible point in time.
