Shame and Strategy: Pariah Figures in Latin America

This paper proposes a critical reading of modernity from the figure 'pariah' as has been worked by Eleni Varikas, feminist thinker. The aim is to examine some of the political strategies used by 'modern pariahs' to survive a paradoxical existential experience, from which both 'equality' and 'difference' are experienced as exclusion. Thus, from the work developed by Varikas, this paper proposes to examine some Latin American examples, where 'shame' is displayed as a political category.
