Non-destructive testing was performed on 13 concrete and steel bridges, each about 45 years old, in order to estimate their condition. The test programme prepared by the Railways Authority included measurement of mechanical properties of the steel and the concrete, measurement of the penetration of chlorides and carbonates, estimation of fatigue state and integrity of the steel, structure, etc. The results, with a statistical analysis, allowed the Railways Authority to arrive to a useful conclusion regarding the life extension of these bridges.
