SOCIAL-WORK AND THE CONCEPT OF INDIVIDUALISM

The author examines current challenges to the concept of individualism as they relate to social work's guiding principle of person-in-environment and to clinical social work practice. Feminist and constructionist thinking help broaden social work's conceptualization of the individual and his or her relationship to the environment. Implications for clinical social work practice are presented.
