DATA ACQUISITION IN THE CONTINENTAL DEEP DRILLING PROJECT

The pilot well of the Continental Deep Drilling Program of the Federal Republic of Germany (KTB) started drilling in September 1987 near Windischeschenbach, Oberpfalz and was successfully completed at the final depth of 4000 m during spring of last year. The start of drilling the ultradeep hole is planned for this year aiming to reach a depth of 10000 to 12000 m. Numerous geoscientific data are not only retrieved by taking rock and fluid samples but also by means of measuring probes. The article describes how the magnetic susceptibility of the rock material is measured at ambient temperatures of about 300-degrees-C and at pressures of almost 2 kbar. It is also shown how these data are transmitted from the probe to the control computer via a 14 km long borehole cable.
