The phase behavior of undefined and complex fluid mixtures has been investigated using the methods of continuous thermodynamics. In particular, an equation of state model using the boiling point and specific gravity as two continuously distributed characterization variables has been developed for high pressure phase equilibrium calculations. Dew points and phase densities of natural gas condensates, crude oils and coal liquids were predicted with excellent results. The results were compared with those obtained using a semi-continuous activity coefficient approach based on the regular solution theory.
