COMPETITIVENESS AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN TOURISM

This article aims to analyze under what conditions tourism can be competitive while ensuring that a sustainable development in tourism destinations is promoted. Hence, first of all the main theoretical and empirical models of tourism competitiveness and sustainability are studied, stressing the role of comparative and competitive advantages to promote the sustainability of tourism development in the long term. Secondly, Argentina is used as a case study to analyze tourism competitiveness, focusing on those indicators related to sustainability. Finally, a comparative study establishes the relationship between traditional tourism variables-such as number of tourist arrivals and revenue per tourism-with systemic and tourism competitiveness variables for a number of developing countries, with the intention of contextualizing Argentina's situation compared to other emerging economies that are relevant in terms of tourism.
