A cartographic digital model (DM) of Mars containing controlled image mosaics and topographic measurements has been prepared for distribution on CD-ROM optical disks. This database is the product of an exhaustive Mars cartography project based on data from the Viking Orbiter missions. It includes a radiometrically and geometrically controlled, photometrically modeled global image mosaic at a resolution of 1/256 degrees/pixel (231 m), a digital topographic model of the entire planet at a resolution of 1/64 degrees (about 1 km), a series of multispectral image mosaics, and selected high-resolution (greater than or equal to 7 m/pixel) image mosaics. This collection of 21 disks is expected to provide support not only for primary scientific investigations of Mars but also for the scientific and engineering operations of future expeditions to that planet.
