Gated Communities - New Form of Residential Space in Post-socialist City

In this paper we discuss the issue of new form of residential housing - gated communities. The aim of the paper is to introduce the problem of gated communities theoretically as well as to show some particular examples of gated communities derived from observation in the Slovak capital. The issue od gated communities is richly represented in foreign geographical literature, both in anglo-american and postsocialist, but only little attention is paid to this problem within Slovak geography. In the paper we pay particular attention to the relationship between postsocialism and gated communities appearance. We argue that increasing of social inequalities in postsocialist cities creates conditions for this new form of housing.
