LUMINESCENCE SPECTRA OF GAMMA-IRRADIATED POLY(METHYL METHACRYLATE) DOPED WITH AROMATIC-HYDROCARBONS

摘要
The emission spectra of both gamma-irradiated and unirradiated poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films doped with different concentration ratios of anthracene (ANT) as donor, and chloranil (CA), as acceptor, have been investigated. Increase of ANT concentration in PMMA gradually increases the fluorescence intensity to a certain quenching concentration (8 x 10(-3) mole/liter). On the other hand, increasing the concentration of acceptor was found to act as a quencher for ANT fluorescence. Four fluorescence peaks located around 380, 400, 424 and 450 nm were recorded when ANT was excited by 253 nm UV light. Exposure of these samples to high doses of gamma-rays showed a pronounced degradation effect on their radiophotoluminescence. The percentage degradation due to gamma-irradiation proved to depend upon the concentration ratio of donor to acceptor and the position of the emission peaks.
