COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT - PLANNING FOR IGNOU LIBRARY-SYSTEM

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), established in 1985 has so far made tremendous progress in imparting education to the vast population of India. The courses offered by the University are quite popular as is indicated by the dramatic increase in the number of students in various courses. Therefore, a well-planned collection development program for the library is essential to support this ever-growing number of students. This paper examines the problem of increased student populations, increased number of courses offered by the University, and the budget constraints of the library. The end result is a decrease in the book-to-student ratio. Alternate strategies, such as resource sharing and use of modern technologies are suggested. Emphasis has also been made for developing the IGNOU library system as a Multi-Media Resource Centre.
