MEASUREMENTS OF CARBONACEOUS AEROSOL AND PARTICLES SIZE DISTRIBUTIONS IN EASTERN ARCTIC

Surface level aerosol elemental carbon and particle size distributions were measured during period from 18.03.90 to 5.05.90 at Golomyannyi Island, Severnaya Zemlya (79-degrees 33' N, 90-degrees 37' E). The highest correlation was found for particles of the smallest detectable diameter (approximately 0.45 micrometers). The measurements gave results ranging from 14 - 514 ng/m3 for mass concentration and 2.5 - 13.5 cm-3 for total concentration for particles with diameters greater than 0.4 micrometers. Analysis of backward trajectories obtained from synoptic maps showed that the highest concentrations were found under conditions of transport from the Ural region. Differences in the particle size distribution spectrum were correlated with different trajectory categories: accumulation mode dominated during transport from the South-West and coarse particles mode - from the West. This work shows that simultaneous measurements of aerosol elemental carbon concentration and particle size distribution can be used to estimate the carbonaceous particles size. Aerosol parameters are influenced essentially by the transport trajectories pathways.
