Uterine Leiomyoma Presenting as Huge Retroperitoneal Mass: A Rare Case Report

Although leiomyoma is a very common tumor in the female pelvis, it is very uncommon in the retroperitoneum. Gradual abdominal distension and discomfort are common presentations. Majority of these tumors could not be diagnosed preoperatively despite advances in diagnostic tools. We report a case of a 40-year-old female who presented with progressive distension of abdomen for 2 years. Ultrasonography revealed a large lobulated heterogeneous mass arising from the pelvis and extending up to the epigastric region. On color Doppler, mild vascularity was noted in the mass. Her tumor markers were normal. Exploratory laparotomy was performed, and a huge solid mass occupying almost the entire abdomen was removed. Histopathology revealed that it is a case of leiomyoma of uterus extending to the retroperitoneum.
