On the inclusion of a diachronic dimension in morphological theory: an epistemological approach

At a time when theoretical models endeavour to extend their scope, the need arises to review, or in some cases even to renew completely, certain established concepts. Inconsistencies and ad hoc explanations can arise from the transfer of metalanguage from one theoretical model to another without re-examining their assumptions. Thus the recent attention paid to historical issues in some sub-areas of linguistics traditionally concerned almost exclusively with synchronic considerations may result in models lacking internal coherence unless subjected to historiographic revision. Morphological theory is one such area. This paper reassesses concepts such as that of the ideal speaker-hearer, calling into question their compatibility with diachronic analyses with a view to achieving a new theoretical synthesis.
