ENERGY-LOSS SPECTRA FOR HEAVY-IONS PENETRATING AMORPHOUS-CARBON FOILS AT LOW VELOCITY

A Monte Carlo simulation method has been used to investigate the energy loss spectrum for heavy ions penetrating thin amorphous carbon targets at low velocities. An impact parameter dependent electronic energy loss formulation of the modified Oen-Robinson type has been chosen, together with the universal ZBL interatomic potential to treat the elastic interaction. The results of the simulations for Ne and Ar ions incident at 80 and 150 keV, respectively, on thin carbon foils have been compared to both theoretical predictions and experimental data.
